Senior Citizens, Inc. implements Pet Food Collection Program for Pets of Meals on Wheels Clients
Banfield_Charitable_Trust_logo

The Meals On Wheels Program of Senior Citizens, Inc. was recently awarded a $2,500.00 grant from the Banfield Charitable Trust to use for a pet food distribution program that helps provide pet food for the companion pets of homebound seniors.

Banfield’s mission is to keep pets and families together. The Trust, a non-profit division of Banfield Pet Hospital, has been making it possible for pets to enjoy a better quality of life by giving back to communities and helping advance pet-related charities. Working hand-in-hand with the Meals on Wheels Association of America, the Banfield Charitable Trust funds hundreds of local pet food distribution programs each year. This innovative program ensures that pets, like their homebound pet parents, are receiving the nutrition they need.

Through daily contact with its Meals On Wheels clients, Senior Citizens, Inc. staff and volunteers learned that hunger can become a mutual problem for pets as well as their owners, especially when the owners are homebound. Seniors have been known to go without eating so that their companion pets can eat. The Pet Food Grant will help homebound seniors provide proper food for their dog or cat while still getting their own proper nutrition through daily meals from the Meals on Wheels program.

To date, 150 Meals On Wheels clients have been identified as pet owners in critical need of pet food. While the grant from Banfield Charitable Trust will help provide for the program, Senior Citizens, Inc. is seeking help with donations of unopened bags of dry dog and cat food, as well as volunteers to help portion and deliver the pet food to clients.

Donations of dry, unopened dog or cat food will be accepted at the following locations:

  • Senior Citizens, Inc. headquarters, 3025 Bull Street.
  • Banfield Pet Hospital location in PetSmart, 11132 Abercorn Street
  • The Humane Society for Greater Savannah, 7215 Sallie Mood Drive
  • Case Veterinary Hospital, 111 Eisenhower Drive
Volunteers are also needed to help sort, bag, and distribute the pet food. Call (912) 236-0363 or toll-free (866) 579-2116 for more information.
